The Basics

Creating polls with Poll Everywhere is a great way to collect live feedback from an audience. Your audience responds with mobile devices over the web, Twitter, or with SMS text messages. These responses are processed by our servers, and we update the visualization that you’re showing your audience from the web or PowerPoint. All of that happens in a matter of seconds.

Creating Polls

A poll is what you create on Poll Everywhere to ask your audience a question. When the audience answers the question, you display the poll to the audience from PowerPoint, Keynote, or a web browser.

  1. To create a poll, log in to your account and click the “Create Poll” button in the top left corner of the My Polls page.

    Create Poll

  2. You will now see the Poll Creation window. Type in the question you would like to ask your audience.

    Poll Questionn

  3. Now you can choose what type of poll to create. Multiple choice polls let the audience members choose one or more answers from a set of answers predefined by you. Open-ended questions let the audience members submit any response they’d like.

    Poll Question Type

  4. Click “Create” to finish and create the poll. That’s it! Now you’re ready to display the poll to an audience so that they can respond.

Remember, you can only ask one question per poll. If you want to ask your audience multiple questions, simply create multiple polls. The Poll Creator window makes it easy to create multiple polls in one fell swoop. You can even paste a list of questions into the window and we’ll try to convert them into polls.

Displaying Polls for Live Feedback from Audience

Poll Everywhere works best when poll visualizations are displayed on a projector or large screen in front of a live audience. The quickest way to display a poll to a large audience is directly from our website in fullscreen mode.

  1. To display a poll in fullscreen mode, select a poll from the My Polls page.

    Poll Title

  2. You should now see the poll’s live visualization. Display the visualization in fullscreen by hovering over the upper right-hand corner and clicking on the “Enable Fullscreen” button.

    Website Display

  3. You may navigate between polls by exiting fullscreen and using the “Previous/Next Poll” links. You can exit fullscreen mode by pressing the “Esc” key.

Setting Up a Custom PollEv.com Page

Custom PollEv.com pages are the easiest way for your audience to respond to your polls. 1. To set up your very own unique PollEv.com page, log in to the PollEv.com reservation page located in your account settings.

My PollEv Page

When presenting polls directly from the website or Mobile Presenter Application, use the Push feature to manually update your PollEv.com page. You can learn more about Push on the Push feature blog post.

Using Poll Everywhere in a Presentation

Poll Everywhere works seamlessly with popular presentation tools including PowerPoint for Windows and Keynote or PowerPoint on Mac. It’s sure to make your presentation more memorable and engaging.

PowerPoint on Windows PCs

We are currently transitioning from Adobe Flash charts to HTML5. Flash charts are downloaded from our website and copy-pasted into your presentation.

HTML5 charts are more reliable, and you insert them using the PollEv Presenter App. The PollEv Presenter App works with PowerPoint 2007 and newer.

Using the New PollEv Presenter App on Windows

To embed live polls in your PowerPoint for Windows presentation:

  1. Enable HTML5 polls on your Labs page
  2. Download the PollEv Presenter App
  3. Install the app
  4. Open or restart PowerPoint, locate the “Poll Everywhere” ribbon
  5. Log in to your account
  6. Using the ribbon, insert a poll into your presentation
  7. Start presenting! (You have to be in slideshow mode to see the polls)

If you run into problems, email us at support@polleverywhere.com.

Apple Keynote and PowerPoint for Mac

Poll Everywhere works with Macs, too! Download the PollEv Presenter for Mac and read the guide at The PollEv Presenter for Mac Help Page.

Responding to Polls

Audience participants may respond to polls from their own devices (phones, tablets, or laptops) using the web, Twitter, or SMS text messages. There is no proprietary hardware to buy or special vendor software to install.

Web Responses at PollEv.com

The easiest way to respond to a Poll Everywhere poll is over the web. At the beginning of a presentation, the presenter will share their custom PollEv.com address. For example, if George Washington were presenting with a PollEv.com page, you would respond to his polls at PollEv.com/george_washington.

PollEv.com Page Instructions

The PollEv.com page automatically updates on your device as the presenter displays polls during the presentation. If you see a picture of a piece of pie on your device, that means you should wait because the presenter is not currently displaying a poll.

Presenters Without Custom PollEv.com Pages

Not all presenters have a custom PollEv.com page. To respond to their polls over the web, go to PollEv.com and type in the keywords that are displayed onscreen.

SMS Text Message Responses

Not everybody owns a smart phone. The good news is that Poll Everywhere works great with phones over SMS text messages. Remember, standard text messaging rates apply, which means that some participants may have to pay their carriers for text messages if they don’t have unlimited SMS text messaging plans.

Texting Instructions

The screenshot above is our US-based text voting number 22333. US educational users will display 37607. Canadian users will display 37607 as well. Read the International SMS text messaging coverage page for information on international coverage.

Twitter Responses

If a presenter has enabled Twitter responses for their poll, you respond to @poll or to the presenter’s Twitter username displayed onscreen.

Twitter Instructions

Twitter also runs local shortcodes in many countries. This blog post describes how to use Twitter to avoid international texting fees.

Participant Registration Guide

If you’re in the audience of a Poll Everywhere presentation, you may receive a registration link from a presenter so that you can share your name and other information, like your email address or a student ID, with them.

  1. To register with a presenter, click the participant invitation link sent to you by the presenter, speaker, or teacher.

  2. Fill in your name and email address, and create a password. Remember to log in when responding via the web.

    Enter Info

  3. Click “Register My Account,” review the terms, and click “Register My Account” a second time if you agree.

    Register

  4. Add additional identification information if applicable. Enter your mobile number if you plan to respond via SMS text messaging.

    Enter Mobile

  5. Make sure to certify your mobile number after entering it by following the indicated steps.

    Certify Mobile

Presenting Polls from a Mobile Device

It’s possible to present polls to an audience without a large screen using our Mobile Presenter Application. The presenter logs into this app, selects a poll they would like to get responses to, and “pushes” it to their audience’s mobile devices. The responders then follow the instructions on their own devices to participate.

Managing Polls

Polls can be created and managed on a mobile device just like they can on a full-blown web browser.

  1. To manage your polls on a mobile device, head directly to PollEv.com/present in your device’s browser or click the Mobile Presenter link from PollEv.com.

    Mobile Presenter Poll Types

  2. Select a group of polls and then select the poll you’d like to manage.

Asking “On-The-Fly” Questions

“On-The-Fly” polls are a quick way to create basic polls and collect impromptu feedback when time is of the essence. During your presentation, an “On-The-Fly” poll can be created and pushed to the audience in a few seconds from your mobile device. These polls use simple formatting to save time (so you’re not fumbling around in front of an audience). You can always go back later from the full site to customize an “On-The-Fly” poll’s options and question title.

Activites

Try this on a smartphone at PollEv.com/activities.

Presenting Without a Projector

Did you know that you don’t need a projector to ask your audience questions? The Poll Everywhere app at PollEv.com/present allows presenters to “push” polls from their mobile devices to everybody else that’s “tuned in” to their personalized PollEv.com page.

Mobile Presenter Tools may be found at PollEv.com/present from a mobile device. Currently only Safari, Android, and Firefox mobile browsers are supported.

Moderating Free Text Polls

You may moderate Free Text Polls, create “On-The-Fly” polls, and manage your existing polls straight from your phone. If your participants all have smartphones or web-enabled devices, you don’t even need a projector or laptop to collect live feedback!

Ways People Can Respond

Use the “How People Can Respond” menu to specify the response methods you would like to make available to your participants. This allows you to choose whether your audience will vote via text message, the web, and/or Twitter. Selecting each option will add the necessary instructions to your poll.

This menu can be found to the right of your poll when viewed on the website.

How People Can Respond

Number of Responses per Participant

Use the “Responses” menu to set the number of responses each participant may submit to the poll question. This setting is useful when you’d like your participants to be able to select multiple choices or vote more than once. You can specify a certain number or allow unlimited responses per participant. As a default, Multiple Choice Polls are restricted to one response per participant, and Free Text Polls are set to unlimited.

Number of Responses

This menu can be found by clicking a poll’s ”Edit” link on your My Polls page.

Using “Instructions” View and Hiding Results

The “Show Instructions” toggle button will display voting instructions while hiding live results on Multiple Choice Polls. This is useful when you’d like to prevent your participants from influencing each other’s responses.

The example below shows a poll’s “Instructions” view with the option to return to the “Live Chart” view.

Instructions View

This menu can be found by hovering your mouse over the upper right-hand corner of a Multiple Choice Poll’s Live Chart.

Show Instructions

Note: Free Text Polls do not have an “Instructions” view. However, you can accomplish something similar by creating your own instructions format (like a PowerPoint slide) to display before showing the chart and results.

Visual Settings

The “Visual Settings” menu contains a variety of settings for customizing the look and feel of your polls. You can adjust these settings to more closely match your preferred graphic style, company aesthetic, or PowerPoint/Keynote template. Below are some of the more commonly used settings:

Title Setting The “Title” menu allows you to adjust the colors and size of your title and to add a logo.

Background Setting Use the “Background” menu to customize the color or set a background image. Note: Images and SWFs larger than 500KB could take several seconds to display when your poll is loading.

This menu can be found by hovering your mouse over the upper right-hand corner of a poll’s Live Chart.

Visual Settings

Using the Leaderboard

The “Leaderboard” found under the “Bars” menu allows you to display options on a Multiple Choice Poll ranked by the most votes per option. You can choose to display every option or to display a specified number of options (for example the top 3). This is especially useful when displaying the results of a poll with a large number of option choices, as showing the top or “winning” options is generally more legible and effective.

Bars Setting The “Bars” menu (Multiple Choice Polls) allows you to select from a Bar or Column type chart, indicate whether to display the total number of votes, customize the color of the bars, and enable a “Leaderboard” view. Use the “Leaderboard” to display the options with the most votes. You can choose the number of “top ranked” options to display. This is especially useful when displaying a poll with many option choices.

Message Effect Setting The “Message Effect” menu (Free Text Polls) allows you to choose an animation effect for displaying new open-ended responses. You can adjust the speed and set the responses to loop as well.

Message Item Setting The “Message Item” menu (Free Text Polls) contains customization options for the display of participant responses. You can change the colors, size, and information to display.

Displaying Cut-off Options and Adjusting Option Size

Sometimes a portion of an option’s text may be omitted on the Live Chart (indicated by a “…”). You can manually adjust the size of option choices using the “Axis & Labels” menu.

Axis Label Setting The “Axis & Labels” menu (Multiple Choice Polls) can be used to customize the colors of your option choices and keywords, adjust the size of your option choices, and display or hide certain chart labels. Note: The “Auto-size” setting is enabled by default. If your poll has longer option choices, you may need to de-select this setting and adjust the “Axis Label Size” manually using the slider.

Sharing Polls

Although Poll Everywhere is mainly used with a live audience for instant feedback, there are a variety of ways to distribute polls via the web. These methods are useful for collecting feedback from remote participants, integrating polls with your own blog or webpage, and distributing self-paced surveys.

Every poll has its own unique link (found in the address bar).

Live Chart Link

This link will display just the poll when visited by someone who is not logged in as the poll’s creator (that’s you). Try it: http://www.polleverywhere.com/multiple_choice_polls/LTMxMDAwMTA5Mw

You can distribute a poll’s Private Voting Link by adding “/web” to the end of a poll’s Live Chart Link.

Private Voting Link

Premium Features

Check out all the goodies you get with our paid plans! Our premium features will help you excite your audience and get the data you need. These features are available on certain paid plans.

Custom Keywords

Keywords are used to submit answers to polls using text message replies. Keywords are necessary to differentiate the replies of your participants from those of others, as all of our users share the same shortcode (the 5 digit “text to:” number). Numerical keywords are auto-generated for you when creating polls. Paid plans with the Custom Keyword feature allow you to set your own voting keywords (4 characters or greater).

  1. To customize a poll’s voting keywords, click a poll’s “Edit” link on your My Polls page.

    Edit Menu

  2. Enter a custom keyword of your choice in place of the auto-generated number. You will be notified of keyword availability as you type.

  3. Click the “Save Poll” button to finish assigning the custom keywords.

Keywords are more convenient than numeric codes for people to text in.

Keywords are shared with everyone, so you will only be able to use those that are not in use by someone else.

Custom keywords

Acquiring Premium Keywords

Premium keywords (3 characters or less) are in high demand, so we play traffic cop. These types of keywords can be purchased for $5 each with a minimum purchase of $25. Send an email to sales@polleverywhere.com if you’re interested.

Segmentation

Response Segmentation is how you combine data from multiple questions to show something interesting or fun.

It’s also how you group an audience into teams, or score many polls at the same time as a competition. You have to see it to believe it: audiences go crazy for this, and the cheers are deafening.

It’s called “Segmentation” because you divide a set of responses by some other poll that defines your segments. You may have used something similar before if you’ve ever looked at correlations or made “pivots”, “crosstabs”, or “stacked charts”.

To enable Segmentation on a poll, click “Enable” and select the poll to segment by from the drop-down list on the “Chart” tab of the “Visual Settings” menu. You can customize the segmented chart by editing the settings in the “Segment Responses” and “Legend” menus.

Enable Segmentation

Segmentation Report

The Segmentation Report is used to show the cumulative graded results on multiple polls by segment. This report requires your polls to have “Grading” enabled with the correct answers indicated.

Moderation

Moderation allows you to control which messages are approved to be shown on a public screen.

  1. To enable the Moderation feature, click on the “View” section and click on “Moderator.”

    Moderator View

  2. Check the box next to “Moderator” to enable moderation.

    Turn Moderator On

  3. Once the Moderation feature has been enabled, approve incoming responses by checking the boxes to the left of each incoming response. The boxes that are checked will be the only responses that show up on your Live Text Wall. Note: If you check a box and then un-check a box for a response, the response will not be removed from live screens until the poll is reloaded.

Adding Sub-Users

Adding sub-users allows you to share a paid plan’s upgraded capabilities with additional presenters who each receive their own Poll Everywhere user account. The number of sub-users allowed is determined by your plan level.

  1. To add additional users, click Settings at the top of the page and select the “Manage Users” menu on the left.

    Manage Users

  2. Click “Add more users” and enter the email addresses of the people you wish to add as users to your account in the text box. Place each email address on a new line, check the box stating you understand, and click “Send invitations.”

    Invite Users

  3. Pending invitations will be displayed on the bottom half of the screen. Note: You can right click on “View Invitation” and copy/paste the link to send the invitation in your own email. This is useful if the original invite has trouble getting through spam filters.

    Pending Invitations

  4. Users who accept an invitation will appear in the top portion by name. You can view the number of polls and the last login for each. You can grant admin privileges to a user by checking the box next to their name in the “Admin” column. Note: Be careful! Sub-users with admin privileges can make changes to and delete other users' polls.

  1. To generate a report, select the polls you would like to include and click the “Report” button from your My Polls page.

    Create Report

  2. The report will be displayed for the polls you selected. The default format is the List Report; however, additional reporting formats are available and can be selected from the menu on the left. Note: You can quickly run a poll again in the future with the settings you’ve indicated by bookmarking the URL.

    Report Note

  3. Additional options can be selected from the menu to the right: download the report as a spreadsheet, show participant data (if participants are registered), show response times, and select from prior cleared runs.

    Report Options

Report Formats

List

When generating a new report, the List Report is shown as the default. This format displays participant responses to multiple polls and is useful for correlating participant responses. Each column represents a poll, and each row represents a unique participant (determined by participants' browser cookie or mobile number).

List Report

Map

The Report Map can be selected from the menu to the left after generating a new report. This format only works for US participants who voted via text messaging. The map will display a “heat map” of participant locations by state (based on area code).

Summary

The Summary Report can be selected from the menu to the left after generating a new report. This format displays summarized poll results in a separate table for each poll included in the report.

Summary Report

Survey

The Survey Report can be selected from the menu to the left after generating a new report. This format displays participant responses by row. The first or “leftmost” poll determines when to start a new row.

The Survey Report works best with 2 or more polls, all configured to allow multiple votes per poll. It’s intended to let you reuse a group of polls as a survey, where an answer to the first poll should signal that a new row in the report should be started.

For example, the Survey Report would be useful if you had these three polls:

  • Multiple Choice: What’s the Session ID of the presentation you just saw?
  • Multiple Choice: Rate the speaker on a scale of 1 (poor) to 5 (excellent).
  • Free Text: Any other feedback for this presenter?

Although each participant may attend between 5 and 20 sessions, this allows you to see a separate row for each time any person starts the survey.

Report Card (Graded)

The Report Card Report can be selected from the menu to the left after generating a new report. This format allows you to grade participant responses across multiple polls.

Sign In Sheet Report

Create a Sign In Sheet Report by clicking the Reports tab at the top of your My Polls page and selecting Sign In Sheet on the left.

This report lets you generate an attendance report based on selecting polls used for sign in, sign out, and recording how many minutes were missed. All fields are optional. One line in the output corresponds to a single person, and if someone has responded to a poll multiple times, we’ll only show the most recent response. We let you define and arrange your fields. Some field name patterns are recognized for special behaviors, as demonstrated by the default fields. * “First name,” “Last name,” “Email,” “Private data,” and “Responding as” are calculated for you. * Fields with names ending in “poll” let you select a poll, and the report will show the response. * Fields with names ending in “time poll” will show the date and time that response was sent in, which is perfect for creating timesheets.

Personal information such as “Responding as”, names, and email addresses are only shown for your registered participants. Once you configure a report, bookmark it in your web browser to save the report layout.

Clearing Results

Clearing poll results allows you to reuse polls and archive past results. When a poll is cleared the results are not lost or deleted; rather, they are stored as “runs” that can be accessed with the reporting features. Poll results can be cleared in several ways.

From PowerPoint or Keynote:

Clear PowerPoint

From a poll’s Live Chart (website):

Participants

Registering participants allows you to identify the individuals responding to your poll questions by name or other information, like student number. This information is essential for instructors who need to grade responses. You may also restrict polls to only accept responses from people who have registered as participants.

To manage participants, click the Participants tab at the top of the My Polls page.

Add Participants

There are two methods of registering participants, Invitation Link and Import Batch.

The participant invitation link is great for posting on a webpage or sending to people via email so that they may register with your account.

Participant Invite

Click on Invite New Participants to access your unique participant registration link. (This link is shared by all of the users on your account. So, if a participant registers with one user, they won’t have to register again.) Distribute this link to participants you’d like to identify in order for them to enter and authorize access to their information.

Batch Import

If you already have a list of participants, perhaps from an existing gradebook, spreadsheet, or BlackBoard, you may import them into Poll Everywhere.

Participant Import

Click on Import Participants and choose a formatted CSV file to bulk upload a new participant batch. Make sure to format the CSV file in the manner specified. Leave blank columns for fields you may choose to omit.

Grading

Grading on a poll allows you to visually display the correct answers on the Live Chart. This also allows you to use the Report Card Report to grade individual performance across multiple polls.

  1. To enable grading on a poll, first enter the “Edit” menu by clicking the “Edit” link at the upper right when viewing a poll’s Live Chart.

    Edit Link

  2. From the “Edit” menu, select “Grade Incoming Responses” and indicate the correct answers by checking “mark this as correct.”

    Indicate Correct Answers

  3. You can display the correct answers to your audience using the Live Chart. Hover your mouse over the upper right-hand corner of the chart and select “Show Correctness.”

    Show Correctness

  4. Use the Report Card Report to grade participant responses across multiple polls. This report will display number of correct responses, percentage of correct responses, and rank your participants by number of correct responses.

Managing Your Account

You may need to edit your personal information, plan level, or credit card. You can change your account information on your Settings page after logging in.

Downgrading/Upgrading Your Plan

Changing Your Text Message Coverage Area

Changing your coverage area changes the “text to:” number displayed on your polls' instructions. This is important for instructing international audiences how to vote via text message, as different countries will need to use certain numbers.

  1. To change your coverage area, log in to your account and click the Settings button at the top of your My Polls page.

    Settings

  2. Click International Text Messaging and select the number you would like to display on your polls' instructions. For more information on international text messaging, check out www.polleverywhere.com/international. Note: Although you can only display one number on your polls at a time, all of these numbers are always active and able to receive responses. So, you can share them with participants according to their location and receive responses without needing to update any settings in your account.

Keeping Your Polls Private

Your poll’s question (but not its results/responses) is indexed by search engines unless you enable this setting.

  1. To keep your polls private, log in to your account and click the Settings button at the top of your My Polls page.

    Settings

  2. Check “Keep all of my polls private” and click “Update profile.” With “Keep all of my polls private” checked, your polls are private unless you share the secret poll URL (web link) with others, or embed the poll widget in a website. (Note: When you share the poll’s URL, only the poll’s owner can see the controls on the right, view the detailed results, or correlate answers between polls.)

Tips, Tricks, and Cool Stuff

Here are some other time-saving tricks to help you get the most from your plan ASAP.

Copying a Poll

There are three different areas you can find polls to copy: My Polls, Account Polls, and Public Polls. You can copy your own polls or other users' polls that you’d like to use.

Copy Poll

  1. Copying from My Polls – Copying from your My Polls page allows you to duplicate polls you have already created. From the “My Polls” page, hover over a poll’s title and click the “Copy” link. You will be brought to a screen that displays the original poll’s question and answers for you to edit if you choose. Note: The question will now begin with “Copy” and the number copied in parentheses. This text can be removed.

    Copy Poll

  2. Copying from Account Polls – Copying from your Account Polls page allows you to duplicate polls your sub-users have already created. This is a convenient way to share polls between multiple users on an account. From the “Account Polls” page, hover over a poll’s title and click the “Copy” link. You will be brought to a screen that displays the original poll’s question and answers for you to edit if you choose. Note: The question will now begin with “Copy” and the number copied in parentheses. This text can be removed.

  3. Copying from Public Polls – You can search a public listing of shared polls and copy them to your own account. Click the Public Polls tab to begin browsing these polls. When you find one you like by using the search field or browsing through the pages, you can click “Ask this question” to copy the poll into your own account.

Importing Polls or Creating Multiple Polls at Once

You can create multiple polls at once or import existing questions from a text document by copying and pasting text into the Poll Creator.

  1. To import existing poll questions, start by opening a text editor like Notepad or Word. (Keep in mind that some text editors may include HTML formatting. Make sure to copy and paste as “plain text.”)
  2. A specific format is required in order to import polls: each question must be entered on a new line. A “?” is used to indicate the end of a question title. For multiple choice questions, enter the options separated by commas after the “?”.
  3. Once you’ve created your text file, simply copy and paste the text into the Poll Creator to generate all of the polls at once.
  4. Review the polls generated and click the “Create” button to create all of the polls indicated.

Example (copy and paste the following into the Poll Creator):

What is your favorite color? red, blue, green What is your name? Poll Everywhere is awesome? True,False Rank this session on a scale of 1-5? 1=Awesome,2,3,4,5=Awful

Paste Questions in the Poll Creator

Pro Tip: If you need to create multiple copies of the same series of poll questions, it is best to use this method to create them. First create your series of poll questions in a text editor using the formatting indicated above. Then, in the text editor, select all of the text and copy/paste until you have the right number of copies (copy/paste, then select all, and copy/paste. So you’ll have 1 version, then 2, then 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 …). When you have the right number, copy and paste the whole series into the Poll Creator. Then you can group the poll questions for distribution or use them with different classes or facilitators.

Setting a Template Poll (Default Visual Settings)

Setting a Template Poll allows you to set a default visual theme for polls or apply visual settings to all of your existing polls. This feature is effective if you want to brand multiple polls without having to adjust each poll’s visual settings one by one, or if you want to specify a preset theme for polls you will create in the future.

  1. Once the desired visual look for your poll has been made, you can then set it as a Template Poll.

  2. To create a Template Poll, click Settings at the top of your account page. Click the “Set” link located towards the bottom of the page.

  3. Using the drop-down menu, select the poll that you would like to set as your Template Poll and click “Update profile.” Note: To enable applying the chosen poll’s visual settings to ALL of your polls, click the “Apply this poll’s visual settings to all my polls” button. If not clicked, your Template Poll will only be applied to newly-created polls. You can also apply visual settings to your sub-users' polls if applicable.
